Brandy celebrated the 20th anniversary of her debut single with a white-hot performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2014, which aired on Tuesday night.
Against an all-white set, the R&B diva reunited with Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Yo-Yo to perform the hip-hop remix of “I Wanna Be Down.”
With her brother Ray J looking on, Brandy kicked things off followed by Lyte, Yo-Yo, and Latifah, who earned the largest applause.
Watch the ladies shut it down.
There are not many things that can inspire an artist to write unapologetically honest lyrics as much as a loving relationship gone sour. In the midst of major celebrity break-ups and divorces currently taking place in the music industry (Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton just to name a few), “Type Girl, Right Girl” seems to come at a perfect time.
“The song is a real life experience and the realest sh-t I ever wrote. Sometimes you think you have a ‘type’ girl… until you meet the right girl”, Nor states. IQ starts off her verse relating to Nor’s relationship drama but twists the plot by sharing that she has no regrets about her past relationships as they ultimately led her to her true love. “I wanted to celebrate my journey from horrible relationships to meeting the love of my life… my wife. I let go of what I thought was my ‘type’ girl and actually found the right girl”, IQ shares.
The video was shot in the official KIN4LIFE recording studio “The KIN Factory” where artists such as Monifah, Georgia ME, and DJ Doseville of Be100 radio have recorded. It is a psychedelic gem in the heart of Decatur, Georgia, and home to a multitude of aspiring artists.
KIN4LIFE has had a busy 2014, having shot the video for “Jackin My Swag”, performing in multiple cities, and creating the theme music for the brand new web series “Crazy, Sexy, Cool”. Most recently, their single ‘Money Brings Trouble’ was featured in the movie “Changing the Game” which aired on BET and screened at the Cannes Festival. Projects to look out for in 2015 include a brand new album, new film ventures, and live performances stateside and abroad. Stay tuned because KIN4LIFE may just show up in a city near you!
“Type Girl, Right Girl” was written, produced, and mixed by KIN4LIFE, and was officially released on September 30, 2014. The video was shot and directed by New York videographers Twin Lenses and edited at the KIN Factory Recording Studio.
